St Francis of Assisi School Newsletter Term 2 Week 8 18.06.2024
Dear Families,
We have reached (almost) the halfway mark of the year as we roll into our 20th week of the school year next week.
It’s certainly been ‘go time’ for the staff here the past 4 weeks. We’ve had so much professional development ranging from staff training in how we teach students to read and spell across the school, further training in our social and emotional program ‘Friendly Schools’ and finally some of the richest training I have been involved in – training around Explicit Teaching and it’ s benefit in our classrooms.
I’ve asked a lot of our staff during this time, as I know our teachers have also been working behind the scenes on student reports.
Reports
Reports will be sent to you digitally through the SEQTA Engage app as indicated to you yesterday. These will likely be ready and on the app on the last day of Week 9.
Yesterday I was home with my son Harrison as he battled a virus that left him couch bound for the day. In between re stocking the tissues, and enduring some children’s television for the day, I spent a lot of time reading Student Reports.
Reports give us a small snapshot into your child’s attainment when measured against the Australian Curriculum. It attempts to capture the first 21 weeks of learning, a lot of time captured in around 200 words, 9 letters that represent grades. As such while they are important imagine the richness of insight you can gather form a conversation with your child’s teacher as opposed to a summative report.
We have already had two formal opportunities to have these learning conversations, the first in Week 0 before the start of the school, and the second late in Term 1. We are one of the very few schools who will offer a third opportunity in around Week 7-8 of Term 3.
A final reminder that while you may share elements of the student report with your student, they are written to the caregiver and as such, discretion should be taken about how much you share in this space.
God Bless,
Scott March
Introducing the ‘Friendly Schools’ Program
We are so excited to introduce a new Social and Emotional Learning Program at St Francis of Assisi School. Staff have undertaken training and we have provided resources to ensure this Program can be rolled out effectively. Schools are increasingly recognising the need to address bullying, resilience, and social skills. Social and emotional learning begins at birth and is first experienced in the family home. Our school will be taking further steps this year to create a friendly and supportive culture. Since 1999, the Friendly Schools research team has conducted 23 high quality community-based studies with over 40,000 Australian children and adolescents, their families and school staff. The resource materials aim to help schools to encourage positive social behaviour and reduce bullying behaviour.
As parents you are the first teachers of your child’s social skills and first providers of emotional support. Social and emotional learning includes self-awareness skills, relationship skills, self-management skills, social decision-making skills, and social awareness skills. Actions we take will include a review of our school policies, introduction of activities to prevent or reduce bullying, strategies to help students cope with bullying and the development of social skills and resiliency factors.
Our goals are to:
• Provide all students with opportunities to develop and practise getting along with other children through classroom learning activities
• Create a positive social environment within our school which actively discourages bullying including cyber bullying
• Continue to encourage staff, students and parents to treat all school community members with respect, care and compassion
• Implement a clear and consistent approach to managing reported bullying incidents
• Provide parents with resources and strategies to help them communicate more effectively with their children about bullying
Please speak to me if you have any questions regarding Friendly Schools

This year your child’s school reports will be available online. In an effort to minimise paper usage and ensure timely access to your child’s academic progress, we are transitioning to an online report card system. This format is in line with other Catholic schools in South Australia.
Please see attached letter and instructions to access SEQTA Engage.
Well done to our Year 5/6 girls and boys basketball teams who competed at the Catholic Schools Basketball Carnival last Friday 14th June. There were some wins but both teams did the school proud with their sportsmanship and team work.
