From the Acting Principal

Dear Friends and Families

Today is School Photo Day and it has been wonderful to see everyone turn up in the correct uniform including hair accessories and jewellery. This is a mark of respect for themselves and in representing the school with pride.

Morning Safety and Supervision

In the morning, from 8:30 am until the school bell goes at 8:55 am to start classes, supervision is provided in the Piazza only. Please remind your chid/ren to move to the Piazza, not near the Reception classrooms, playground or library, so we can ensure everyone is safe and monitored. Thank you for your cooperation.

Parent/Teacher Interviews are available to you this week. Please contact your child/ren’s teacher, if you haven’t already, should you wish to discuss your child/ren’s learning and set goals for the remainder of the school year. We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with you to ensure a quality learning experience for all.

Strategic Planning Community Consultation
Please see the invitation in this newsletter to be part of the School’s Strategic Planning next Thursday 15th September in the evening between 5:30 and 6:30 pm. This will be held in the library. We are working with students, staff and community to include everyone’s voice.

Parent Volunteers
The Year 1/2 cohort enjoyed an excursion to the Museum and Art Gallery last Friday and the experience reminds me that it is timely to let you know of the requirements in place for parents/caregivers to volunteer in our school.

To ensure the safety of everyone in our school community, all volunteers are required to complete the following steps before being placed on our School's Volunteer register.

1. Complete a Volunteers Declaration form (submit to front office)

2. Complete a Volunteers Application Package (submit to front office)

3. Complete the Online RAN (Responding to Abuse and Neglect) training course. Please use this link to register a Plink volunteer account https://www.plink.sa.edu.au/pages/signup.jsf fill in your details and in the 'Select account type' select 'Volunteer' then select the "Responding to Abuse and Neglect online course for Volunteers". Upon completion, of course the certificate will be emailed to you. (Submit a copy to the Front Office)

4. Attend a Volunteer School Induction (updated every 5 years)

5. Provide COVID 19 Vaccination Certificate

6. Provide to the school either:

  •  a Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide Clearance letter or card (updated every 5 years)
  •  DHS Working With Children Check. (updated every 5 years)
  •  SAPOL badge
  • AFP badge

7. A Working with Children Police Clearance can be organised by the school. Parents must present 100 points of ID (one with a photo) and all of the above documents for a clearance to be organised.

8. When you receive the Police Clearance, the original must be presented to the Front Office for copying and a photo will be taken for a badge.

9. You will be added to the Volunteer register and a badge provided.

Aprim News

National Child Protection Week

This year’s National Child Protection Week will take place from 4 to 10 September 2022, with an overarching theme: “Every Child, in Every Community, Needs a Fair Go” and focuses on children growing up safe and supported.

You will find our Commitment Statement in our front office which outlines the Catholic Archdiocese Schools Commitment to keeping children safe in our setting. We are commited to child protection by adopting measures to ensure the safety of all, for example teacher training, volunteer checks and ensuring our children’s voices are heard. Resources can be found at: https://www.napcan.org.au/ncpw-theme/.

Safeguarding Sunday

Safeguarding Sunday (formerly Child Protection Sunday) follows National Child Protection Week and is celebrated by Catholic parishes and communities across the Archdiocese on September 11. It  provides an opportunity for children to rejoice in the life of the Church, recognise that they are valued, respected and heard.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference intends Safeguarding Sunday to be a day to acknowledge the immense damage caused by the sexual abuse of children and adults at risk, including by priests, religious and lay people within Catholic contexts and an opportunity to clearly state our commitment to safeguarding all children and young people.  As a gift to children and young people, the Adelaide Archdiocese Child Protection Unit has designed and created a small magnet for each child attending Mass on Safeguarding Sunday.

The colourful magnets include a quote from Pope Francis: Coinciding with Safeguarding Sunday, the Child Protection Unit will launch the Your Voice, Your Say project where all children (under 18 years) will be given the opportunity to provide feedback on important matters which affect them.
Young children will receive an activity booklet while young people will be invited to engage in an online survey seeking their thoughts and ideas. This Archdiocesan initiative continues to underline our commitment to ensuring children and young people are safe, informed and encouraged to participate in the life of the Church.

Cybersafe Families

Last week our school hosted Cybersafe Families workshops for students and parents. Cybersafe Families is a trusted eSafety Provider endorsed by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. The aim of these sessions was to support positive online experiences and digital citizenship by encouraging students to navigate their way around their online world with responsibility, resilience, respect and empathy. The evening session provided parents and carers with strategies to help make home environments cyber safe. More information and fact sheets for parents can be found on the Cybersafe Families Website.
